Modernising corporate reporting: turn the UK consultation into a response plan

TaxMirror editorial team · Published:

The UK corporate-reporting consultation proposes simpler, more proportionate reporting. Companies can map the proposals to their current reporting burden without treating them as law yet.

What is proposed, and what is not

The Department for Business, Innovation, Science and Trade consultation published on 7 September 2026 explores changes to corporate, financial, non-financial, governance and remuneration reporting, including thresholds, exemptions and digital communications. It is a consultation, not an enacted change to a company’s reporting duties.

The accompanying government announcement describes proposals to clarify the purpose of annual reports, simplify which companies report particular information, and make the framework more proportionate for smaller and medium-sized businesses. Do not remove a current disclosure because it appears in a proposal.

Create a practical impact map

List each report and disclosure your company currently prepares, the legal or accounting source, the entity size and the internal owner. Add a column for the consultation proposal that might affect it, then mark the result as possible simplification, possible new work, or no apparent effect.

Keep the current filing calendar unchanged while the consultation is open. A dated impact map lets directors, finance teams and advisers respond to specific questions without presenting a policy option as a settled rule.

Record the response and watch the timetable

The consultation is open to companies, investors, creditors and other stakeholders. The government pages state that responses close on 30 November 2026. Save the version of the consultation reviewed, the questions considered, the evidence behind any cost estimate and the person who approved the response.

Future legislation, exemptions and commencement dates may differ from the consultation. Recheck the official publication before changing accounts, governance processes or reporting software.
